However, applying a 20% tax rate (approximately the average effective tax rate for those paying income tax), he would then owe to the IRS $438 per year. THEN, he could also be required to pay child support on this amount, which, at the New York rate of 17% for one child, would be $372.30 per year. Thus, his "gift" could end up costing him as much as $810.30 per year.
